By Kamlyn Jurgensen January 9, 2015
They always say to "break the ice" with something funny, right? Well, if you can overlook that penguin pun, I've got a couple jokes to get us rolling.

What do Penguins eat for lunch?  Icebergers.

Or how about...

How does a penguin build its house?  Igloos it together.

I am not that knowledgable about penguins, but I have to admit that I have a fascination with them. I love to watch them tobogganing, swimming and launching themselves out of the water. Thank goodness for wikipedia! Here are a few facts I learned about them.
  1. They live in the Southern Hemisphere.
  2. The largest living penguin species is the Emperor Penguin.
  3. Penguins live in a colony.
  4. Penguins are monogamous during mating season.
  5. Most penguin species only lay one egg each season.
  6. There's a Macaroni Penguin:
To help you celebrate the day, here are four great penguin movies to try Madagascar, March of the Penguins, Happy Feet and Mr. Popper's Penguins.

Learning
Funtastic Fun and Learning has taken some crackers, a coffee creamer container and made a penguin math game out of them. It's perfect for teaching little ones how to count while they practice using their fine motor skills.

The kids will love rolling the dice and drawing their penguin with this free printable from Teaching Heart

Crafts
Crafty-CraftedStudio.com has a toilet paper tube penguin, a footprint penguin and egg carton penguin fridge magnet that the kids will love whipping up on a long winter day.

Frugal and crafty mom, Michelle, has two great sites, Crafty Morning and Sassy Dealz and she has come up with two great penguin projects, the Paper Heart Penguin and Popsicle Stick Bow Tie Penguin Craft for Kids

Huppie Mama's Penguin Plate only takes 5 items to put together and one of those is a paper plate.

Food

The Club Penguin Bento Box will have them gobbling up their lunch!

The Mom of Almost Unschoolers has gone above and beyond and had a whole penguin party including a fun iceberg penguin cake. Get inspired with her party ideas here

Lorie from Reading Confetti has created these adorable Frozen Banana Penguins to go along with her penguin book selections.

If you are looking for more reading selections that feature penguins, ask your librarian for a recommendation. When I searched "penguins" in my library's catalog, there were over 900 entries. There are definitely lots to choose from.
