Learn with Your Kids

Black History Month

February 2, 2012
Spend time with your children this month discussing the importance of Black History Month.  Here are a few sites we like that will introduce your family to African Americans that have made a difference in our country’s history!

Learn about Real African American Heros and their stories of achievement and service.  This site focuses on leaders and positive role models from all walks of life.  Meet the first and only African American woman to fly the U-2 spy plane, African American military leaders and astronauts.  Did you know that between the Civil War and the Vietnam War, 86 African Americans have been awarded the Medal of Honor?

Visit history.com and view short clips on the origin of Black History Month, the 1954 event that sparked the Civil Rights movement and the historic video of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as he leads the march on Washington. The site also shares images of famous Black women in politics, as authors, celebrities and athletes.

We also like all the activities and facts found from the Black History Month page on Fact Monster, including the Black History quiz just for kids.
