App Review: Wee Pray, Pray with Me
If daily prayer with your children is a part of your family’s routine, there’s no need to change or stop this meaningful time when Mom or Dad have to TDY or deploy.
“Wee Pray - Pray With Me” is an app for iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch that helps parents keep prayerful contact with their families while away from home. Developed by Dawn Kemp, a former submariner’s daughter, Navy spouse, and mom who knows a little something about separation and the importance of keeping in touch. “I was that child whose parent was gone, the spouse waving from the deck [as her husband deployed], and then the military mom coping with a small child alone,” she shares. “When my daughter was young, my husband was stationed out of the country … our only contact being MARS phone calls and regular mail. By the time we were able to be a family, he was a stranger in her eyes. She didn't recognize his voice or place it as belonging to the photo of her ‘Daddy’.” Dawn’s experiences inspired her to develop “Wee Pray.”
The easy-to-use app allows you (the parent) to attach photos and record prayers or special messages for your child to play when the deployed parent cannot be with them. The app allows the away-from-home person (be it Daddy in Iraq or Nana in another state) to reinforce their special relationship with the at-home-child and helps the at-home-parent maintain and support daily routines, like prayer time. “The app is not a game; it's not a book ... it was designed to give comfort to a child missing his parent or grandparent,” says Dawn. With the touch of a finger, a daily message can be recorded and sent via the app for your child to hear. The kid friendly design makes access easy for your child. He or she can visit your downloaded “Wee Pray” app anytime to look at six different views of your photos and to listen to up to four different, pre-recorded messages per photo. Having the option of pre-recording your prayers or messages prior to go-time is a nice feature. Military assignments often take our service members to restricted areas where commercial internet access is unavailable. Updated voice messages and photos can be emailed via the app when connectivity is a go.
Households with both parents at home can use the app to support bedtime prayers on date nights -- bonding time for just Mom and Dad doesn’t have to put a halt on routines already in place. The use of the app (by contributing parties) is also a nice way to reinforce prayerful relationships with other relatives or special friends who live far away.
This app is a great option for the military parent who cannot maintain a regular online presence during his assignment. Anytime your child wants feel a connection with you through visual and voice, "Wee Pray" is there. The app is available on iTunes and is $1.99 to download.
