Happy July!

A note from the editor

By Kamlyn Jurgensen July 3, 2015
Happy Independence Day!! I hope you all are about to step away from the computer soon and enjoy this weekend's festivities of fireworks and barbecues! I know I am. Taking these opportunities to be with friends and family will help you recharge and be able to take on next week with new vigor.

Speaking of taking on next week, I recently got a Fitbit and am constantly trying to reach my daily and weekly goals. I have to say, buying the Fitbit is probably one of the best things I have done for myself -- and my family because they all wanted one too. I had no idea how sedentary I was until I had it in front of me in black and white. Well, I am not the only one trying to get in my 10,000 steps, many people across the country have taken to this gem and are now out walking every day. I have to say it can be hard to get in 10,000 steps, so military wife, mom and avid Fitbit enthusiast, Heather Bouwhuizen, shares her 10 Tips to Get in Your 10K Steps with us.

I am so excited to share with you once again the beautiful Hawks Cay resort and their Annual Heroes Salute. Hawks Cay goes out of its way to thank our military members and first responders during the salute with special events, activities and great pricing. Heroes Salute runs August 17 through November 23 this year and will have extra events happening over the Labor Day weekend. To find out more, read 7th Annual Heroes Salute at Hawks Cay

Don't miss out on DoD's Summer Camp Experience for your teens. These camps are held all over the country and allow kids to meet new people, develop skills and have an adventure of their own.

If you haven't heard there's a new form of bullying taking over the internet, it's military spouse shaming. Too fat. Lazy. Bad parent. Stupid. These hateful words are becoming too common on Facebook, and honestly, between groups of friends. Please take a moment to read, Calling Out Military Spouse Shamers. I hope bringing this issue into the light of day will help stop the spreading of these hurtful behaviors. Bottom line is...it is not okay. Please take a stand with us and help put a stop to spouse shaming.

A huge "Hooah" to the Army for taking home the gold in the 2015 Department of Defense Warrior Games! You can find the final outcomes HERE. Learn more about these games in Military Athletes Show Skills at 2015 DoD Warrior Games

I'll sign off with a few lines from one of my favorite patriotic songs of all time:

And I'm proud to be an American,
where at least I know I'm free.
And I won't forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me.
~Lee Greenwood

Happy 4th of July!
