Tequilla Parker

Fayetteville, GA

We are a family with one retired veteran with 20 years and one medically retired veteran that served 11 years in the Army.

What did you like about military life?
I loved a new beginning with those who welcomed you with open arms. I loved that it was exciting to move to a new duty station just to pick out a new place to live and call home.

What did you not like so much?
I didn't like leaving some true friends with great hearts. We always had to start over to meet new friends. I never liked getting up for PT. I hated to get up early in the morning and go out in the cold and dress like 1SG in whatever uniform he chose.

Do you have special talents or hobbies?
I love to make floral arrangements, decorate, and cook.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
I see myself growing older with my husband and daughter. I plan to see my daughter off to college or military - whichever she chooses. I would like to travel and explore the world with my husband.

What's the most rewarding part of your life?
The most rewarding part of my life was to serve my country, and while serving I met the love of my life. I feel great that I can be someone's hero. I love that after being medically retired with no notice and having to start life over I am happy to be a stay-at-home mom. I love being able to be a part of both my husband's and daughter's life.

What's the most challenging part?
The most challenging part about my life is adjusting after being medically retired and being looked at differently.

How would you say being part of a military family shaped you?
I love my military family even now that I'm retired. It is a different kind of love than with civilians. Nothing against civilians, but I feel that military families bond more because when we are away from our loved ones we rely on love from our military family.

What has surprised you about military life or life since you left the military?
I was very surprised that I even stayed in the military as long as I did because when the drill sergeant asked who wants to go home, I was the first to raise my hand!

What advice or encouragement can you share?
I would share to always follow your dreams, never quit, support each other, lead from the front, and bring someone with you. Make your goal and stick to it no matter what.
