Poems in the Attic: Review and Giveaway

By Lee & Low Books April 1, 2016
There are over two million children with parents in the military, many of whom will move during their childhoods as a result. While living in many difference places can be a unique and rewarding experience, it can also be hard to adjust to a new environment so often. The new picture book Poems in the Attic, written by Nikki Grimes, is a moving story that explores both the good and bad of a transitory childhood, especially in a military family.

Poems in the Attic is based on Nikki Grimes' own childhood experiences moving around often, as well as the experiences of friends from military families. The book tells the story of a young girl who spent her childhood on the move as the daughter of an Air Force captain. A generation later, our narrator discovers her mother's old poems and is inspired to create poems about her own home life. Grimes cleverly uses tanka, a Japanese poetry form, together with free verse to a create dual narrative of the lives of both mother and daughter.

This book is great for kids ages 6-11 years old. It is currently available in hardcover for $19.95.
