A Letter from the Managing Editor

By Kamlyn Jurgensen August 7, 2015
Military families know how to handle transition. We change houses, schools, jobs and neighbors faster than any other group that I know. I have to confess, though, that putting together the August issue of Macaroni Military Family has probably been one of the hardest for me, because I didn't know if I should keep it all about summer or talk more about the upcoming school year. So, like any military family member, I made the best out of both.

In this issue you'll find a story on making use of the last few weeks of summer in 11 Fun Ways to Say Goodbye to Summer! and what to do when you hear I Don't Want to Go to School. If you stop over on the Macaroni Military Family Facebook page, you'll see we are doing a Back-to-School countdown to help you transition smoothly into the school year.

We've also included this article about the challenges and opportunities military children face especially when it comes to education. U.S. Pacific Command, Navy Adm. Harry B. Harris Jr., said “Our sailors, soldiers, airmen and Marines sacrifice a great deal when they decide to put on the cloth of their nation, but the last thing they should have to accept is that their children will receive anything but the very best educational experience during the most formative period in their lives.”

On August 4, 2015, the U.S. Coast Guard celebrated 225 years of service to our country, so I had to include a story about them. Read how one Coast Guardsman swam a treacherous route 4 times to save the crew of a fishing vessel in Face of Defense: Coast Guardsman Swims to Save Lives

Many of you may not know, but I am an avid cook and farmers market goer. Farmers Markets employ locally, have great produce which was usually picked within a day of the market and are just a wonderful part of the community. Read all about National Farmers Market Week and see a few things you'll be able to whip up with your newly purchased fruits and veggies in this article

Finally, it can be hard to find the time to exercise when your kids don't have the patience to sit in a stroller while you get in your daily walk or run. Here are some tips from running enthusiast and military spouse, Luisa Rodriguez.

See you in September for bonfires, pumpkins and sweater weather!
